Passed Away : May 25,1946 in New York, New York.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION


- Was an American nursery school & kindergarten teacher.
- Began her career as a kindergarten teacher in Louisville, Kentucky.



National Association Nursery Education (NANE)

- Was a key founder of the National Association Nursery Education(NANE).
- This association which still exists is now directed under the name of the National Association For the Education of Young Children

LOUISVILLE FREE KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION (LFKA)


- Became the director of the Association in 1893.
- Began twelve years of supervisory leadership.

SCHOOL MOVEMENTS/PATTY "HILL BLOCKS"

- "Patty Hill blocks" (set of large blocks)were one of her inventions.These blocks allow young students to create structures by themselves and also with other students. It is a great way to exercise their imaginations and develop creativity skills.

FURTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS:


- Helped create the Institute of Child Welfare Research at Columbia University Teachers College. (Her link is at the bottom of the page at this link)- "Introduced progressive philosophy to Kindergarten classrooms that laid the foundation for kindergarten education in the public school system of the United States."
- "Put an emphasis on creativity and the natural instincts of children, in contrast to more structured education methods of Friedrich Froebel."
-Believed in a philosophy of inclusion.

THE PATTY SMITH HILL AWARD


- Presented by the Association for Childhood Education International(ACEI) to a member who has contributed to the betterment of ACEI and children.


HAPPY BIRTHDAY

- Along with her sister Mildred, the two women wrote the tune of "Happy Birthday To You"
- It was written in 1893.
- The song was meant to be used as a welcome to start each school day. (Both the sisters were Kindergarten teachers)
- She wrote it when she was in her first year of teaching Kindergarten.
- It was originally called "Good Morning To All".

-Patty and Mildred J Hill were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 12th 1996.
